A MAJOR route in North Dorset will close in both directions overnight for several nights as part of resurfacing works - with a 32-mile diversion route in place.

A30 Salisbury Road near Shaftesbury, between the junctions with Royal Chase Roundabout and Greenacre Way, will be completely shut on weekdays at 8pm until 6am from Wednesday, September 8 until Thursday, September 23.

The 660-metre stretch of road is required to close in order to safely allow Dorset Council’s maintenance crews to resurface the busy route.

The roadworks come as repairs at the Royal Chase Roundabout in Shaftesbury near completion.

A public notice from Dorset Council states: "This order will enable Dorset Council to carry out carriageway maintenance and resurfacing works.”

During the overnight road closures, a 32.3-mile diversion route will be in place, which will see motorists travel onto A350, B3089 and A30 and across Dorset and Wiltshire.

Alternatively, there are a number of shorter but unofficial routes that drivers can take to avoid the road closure. These are not suitable for HGVs and should be avoided if using larger machinery.
