INVESTIGATIONS are ongoing into a crash involving an e-scooter on Bournemouth beach promenade which led to a young child suffering a suspected fractured collarbone.

As reported, a four-year-old boy was taken to hospital following the collision on the second day of the Bournemouth Air Festival.

The incident occurred at 1pm on Friday, September 3, on the promenade near to Boscombe Pier.

The boy, from Christchurch, was taken to Poole Hospital following the incident.  The e-scooter rider, a man in his 30s from Lancashire, was interviewed on suspicion of driving offences under The Road Traffic Act.

Providing an update on Monday, September 6, a Dorset Police spokeswoman said the boy's injury condition was unchanged.

"No arrests have been made," said the spokeswoman. "Enquiries into the collision remain ongoing."

The e-scooter involved was hired through Beryl as part of the government trial currently operating in Bournemouth and Poole.

The crash led to the force and police and crime commissioner for Dorset to issue a warning about e-scooter use.

Police Sergeant Lee Savage, of the traffic unit, said: “This collision happened during the Bournemouth Air Festival, which has seen hundreds of thousands of people visit the seafront with thousands more visitors expected over the weekend.

“We are yet again urging people not to ride either Beryl or privately-owned e-scooters inside the festival site because of the sheer number of people in the area and to help keep people safe."

Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick said: “This must have been a horrible experience for the young child involved and I wish him a speedy recovery, but this incident once again highlights the dangers posed by using e-scooters in public places."
