A POOLE pub that serves over 70 craft beers and ciders has taken the crown for Pub of the Week.

Brewhouse & Kitchen in Dear Hay Lane was originally a pair of 18 century houses that were later transformed into a pub nicknamed 'the Shovel', which housed a malting house and skittle alley.

The pub is now a popular spot amongst locals for its vast selection of drinks and wide range of food.

But for general manager of two years Spencer Doddard, there is one thing about the pub in particular that sets it apart from other pubs in the area.

He said: "We are the only pub in Poole with a microbrewery on-site, so we have a selection of our own beers, but we also have other beers as well.

"There is a huge selection of gin and whiskeys, so there is lots of choice for customers. We serve cocktails too.

"We are family-friendly and dog-friendly. We have a great outside space and beer garden.

"We have a cracking premium food offering and our signature dish is chicken cooked with our home-brewed beer. We also have American-style dishes, ribs, Sunday Roasts and more."

If drinking in the pub does not take your fancy, Brewhouse & Kitchen offers a masterclass cruise experience in Poole Harbour.

Spencer said: "We have a collaboration with Dorset Cruises where people can enjoy a Craft Ale Cruise.

"On the cruise, customers enjoy a welcome ale, a masterclass on eight different beers and lunch onboard a vintage motor yacht in the harbour."

A Head Brewer from the pub hosts the masterclass onboard the yacht, and customers can learn about brewing methods, ingredients used and "flavours derived from different hops."

The pub has previously been known as the Brewers Arms and the Rising Sun, but the change in names and hands has not affected the pub's loyal customer base.

Spencer said: "We have got a really strong group of locals who visit most days in the week and we love seeing the same friendly faces."

Although events for pub customers and regulars have been put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, plans are in motion for Christmas.
