A CAMPAIGN has been launched to pedestrianise Wareham Quay creating a “tranquil scene”.

Friends of Wareham Quay has put together a detailed proposal seeking to transform the area into a “safe traffic-free space” at the town’s riverside location.

They believe a pedestrianised quay, which is currently dominated by a car park, would be a “wonderful and vibrant addition to Wareham’s ambience.”

But the group is aware of the need for public support if Dorset Council is to be persuaded and have urged people to register their support.

Spokesman Chris Hockley said: “I would urge everyone who thinks this is a good idea to go to the website and tick the supporters’ box.

“Just about everyone I have spoken to on a casual basis thinks a pedestrianised quay would be brilliant for all sorts of reasons.

“But now we need to transform this support into black and white statistics that will make Dorset Council sit up and take notice.”

The group’s proposal includes an aim “to establish a recognised gathering place for the community and to open up the quay to a plethora of other possibilities for its use, many of which are community-based”.

Chris said: “In a nutshell, we could replicate the atmosphere of the European piazzas we love to enjoy when on holiday.

“It’s interesting that in just about every photograph promoting the delights of Wareham, it is the quay that takes centre stage. It’s obvious why – it’s the town’s most beautiful location. And yet, to all intents and purposes, the quay is a car park.

“Think of all the things we could do there if the space was freed up. Charity events, a Christmas fayre during the festive season, flower shows, music or choir performances, arts and crafts, promotions by local businesses, a beer festival, a weekday market stall and lots more. The only limit is our imagination.”

The group’s proposal offers alternatives to the quay’s 27 car parking spaces and gives Dorset Council a detailed breakdown of how it could recoup lost parking fee income.

Chris added: “The council should also reflect modern thinking about cutting pollution to combat climate change, enhancing the public realm and creating safe open-air gathering places in the event that the threat posed by Covid-19 lingers on.

“Our proposal gives them a golden opportunity to address all three issues. Please support us.”
