A FAMILY-friendly pub that is at the heart of the community has claimed the crown for Pub of the Week.

The Green Man pub in Victoria Road, Wimborne has been under the management of married couple Kat and Scott Valenti for nearly five years.

The pub is heavily involved in all aspects of community life, from sourcing local produce to supporting local charities and organisations.

Kat said: "When we moved in the pub was very much a community pub and we kept it like that.

"Our unique selling point is definitely that we use local shops, butchers, greengrocers and fishmongers for our menu. All of our food is home-cooked and we only need to pop outside to get everything. We use local businesses, so they help us out and we help them. We have a good relationship with all of them."

Kat and Scott go beyond supporting local businesses; they frequently lend a hand to charities and those in need.

At the start of the first lockdown, the pair offered a Sunday Roast delivery service, which they have continued, to a variety of local customers.

The clientele included elderly people who enjoyed having some company and a tasty meal while they were shielding.

Kat said: "It wasn’t about making a lot of money, it was about making sure people got a decent hot meal. We also did a lot of shopping for people and picked up prescriptions during the first lockdown.

"From that we decided to continue Sunday Roast deliveries and start Fish Friday, which was born through lockdown.

"We do a lot of charity work and we have previously helped Wimborne Foodbank and we try to support many of the local sports clubs as well. We are currently supporting Wimborne Town football club. We try and do at least a couple of fundraiser days a year.

"We are holding a family fundraiser on August 28 to raise money for a defibrillator outside the pub.

"This came about as someone collapsed outside the pub and the nearest defibrillator was near The White Hart. Luckily, the man didn’t need it in the end, but this fundraiser has come off the back of that incident.

"There will be a raffle, stalls, local clubs will be there and a first responder will be showing people how to use the defibrillator."

The Green Man has also supported Wimborne First School and Nursery by buying the school CCTV cameras following a spate of vandalism incidents.

Kat added: "We’re here for everybody who needs a hand. We’re a family and we want it to be a family pub.

"Lots of people know they can come to us and ask for help and we will generally try to say yes."

Food is served every day at the pub, with lunch served from midday until 4pm, the Sunday Roast Menu Lunch from midday until 4pm, and roasts from midday until 5pm on Sundays only.
