FRESH plans to address traffic issues in a Bournemouth neighbourhood have been put out for consultation.

BCP Council highways chiefs have released details on proposals to alter the ongoing trial in Victoria Park Road.

Since August last year the road has been blocked off to motor vehicles between the junctions with Oates Road and Namu Road, with the aim of creating a quieter, safer, and more pleasant environment for local people to walk and cycle.

As reported, residents in the area spoke of concerns that the closure, which was implemented through an experimental traffic regulation order, had pushed rat-running drivers onto other roads.

The change was introduced when the Unity Alliance administration was running the local authority. Now Conservative policy makers are seeking the views of residents on changing the road closures.

The new suggestions include blocking off Victoria Park Road just east of its junction with Namu Road, rather than between Namu Road and Oates Road. A new road block allowing just cyclist and pedestrian access in Vicarage Road, just west of its junction with Morden Road, is also on the table. Lastly, an option that would see motor vehicles only able to exit onto Wimborne Road from Vicarage Road and not enter is proposed.

Councillor Mike Greene, BCP Council portfolio holder for transport, said: “We have carefully considered the results of the previous consultation and with the support of local ward councillors, we’re now proposing a range of options which we think have the potential to improve the trial at Victoria Park Road and create a better environment for all those travelling in the area.

“We now want everyone to share their thoughts on which options they prefer before any further decision are made.’’

The Unity Alliance ran consultations on the initial trial by introducing the road blocks at the same time as seeking residents’ views. Cllr Greene this approach would not be used in relation to the new plans for Victoria Park Road.

Feedback from the consultation, which launched on Monday at haveyoursay.bcpcouncil.gov.uk/victoriaparkroad, will be collated before a decision is made to either remove or implement any of the options under a new trial.

Residents will then have further opportunities to comment before a final decision is made to retain, amend, or remove the trial completely.
