A SHERBORNE-based car auction has totalled record sales of classic and vintage cars.

The family run Charterhouse Auctioneers saw a record £475,000 total from their car auction at the Haynes International Motor Museum in July.

Owner Richard Bromell said: “We had a great line up of 70 classic cars at Haynes from restoration projects to super cars.

“With a strong market and plenty of bidders keen to add to their collections, we had buyers from as far away as Australia.”

The top draw on the day was £40,000, paid for a 2003 Noble M12 GTO 3R. It was also the fastest car in the auction with a top speed of 186mph.

Elsewhere at the auction, a 1975 Ford Escort restoration project, having been garage stored for the past 25 years, sold to a father and son to restore for £24,000.

There was another car that hit the right note with bidders – a 2002 Jaguar XK8 coupe owned by Spandau Ballet lead guitarist Gary Kemp which sold for £7,000.
