AN English bull terrier has been waiting 18 months in the kennels at the RSPCA Ashley Heath animal centre to find his forever home.

The ten-year-old terrier is struggling to win over a new owner because of his shy nature, meaning potential adopters don’t get to see the real Toby.

Once new people do get to know him they’ll find he has a sweet nature, says his care assistant Emily Green.

She said: “Toby is a sweet, cheeky chap who, despite his age, still has a spring in his step and has a big character.

“Unfortunately he’s a shy lad when he meets new people and can be a little nervous around strangers so we’ve found potential adopters struggle to see the real Toby.

“Once he gets to know you, however, he’s such an affectionate lad with so much love to give.”

When the RSPCA rescued Toby in January 2020 he was found underweight and very nervous, having believed he had never previously experienced a loving environment.

His care assistant added: “It took us days to get poor Toby out of his kennel, he was so frightened, it was heart-breaking to see.

“Sadly, he’d had a tough life and we don’t think he’d ever experienced a loving home before so he’s had a lot of adapting to do.”

It took a few weeks after arriving for the English bull terrier to play with his toys, which Emily says was “really emotional” to see.

Toby is said to love “belly rubs and playing ragger games”, as well as “exploring on walks and cuddling up to his teddy for a snooze.”

Ashley Heath’s team are desperate for Toby to be rehomed and believe he will be a welcome addition to the home of a potential adopter.

Emily added: “Anyone who considers giving Toby a chance will really be helping a dog in need.

“With time, training and consistency we know Toby will make a rewarding and loving companion.”

Toby has worked a lot with the behaviour team to help him and now feel he’s ready to continue his work in a loving home environment.
