ASTONISHINGLY, BCP Council allowed SSE Power to close the Blandford Road on July 2 cutting off Hamworthy from the two bridges, leaving just one road in and out of Hamworthy, resulting in delays of up to an hour getting in and out of Hamworthy.

Clearly, in view of the amount of tourist traffic at this time of year in the area, the impact has been horrific and probably very damaging to the local economy.

This work should have either been done earlier in the lockdown period or left until the autumn.

They have re-opened the bridges and the road today, but only for northwest bound traffic and this has further exacerbated the situation as the already completely congested exit road from Hamworthy now has extra traffic that has crossed the bridges or come off a cross channel ferry, completely oblivious to the horror that awaits them.

Locals have been complaining about the lack of signage since the work started which has resulted in many people unnecessarily finding themselves in the mayhem and unintentionally making it worse.

Neither the council or SSE have made any attempt to improve the signage – which just says ‘road ahead closed’ with no indication of which road or what motorists should do.

I phoned the council at 3.25pm today and an operator said that she was taking complainants details so that a response could be sent in due course but no one was available to speak to me as they are all ‘working from home today’, and can’t be contacted. She gave me the name and mobile number of the SSE official who is coordinating work, but there was a recorded message guiding me to the website and advising that no messages would be responded to.

The behaviour of BCP Council has been appalling and needs to be brought to the public attention so that they can be made to finally take steps to improve the situation and be held to account.

Simply blaming SSE who, left to their own devices I would not expect any better of, is unacceptable.
