A BOAT put out a mayday call after running aground in Hook Sands, prompting a rescue mission for the Poole lifeboat crew.

Poole lifeboat was called to a number of incidents on Friday.

A spokesperson said: “Poole Lifeboat was tasked by UK Coastguard just before 2pm on one of the hottest days of the year so far to a report of person in the water.

“The person had been recovered by passing boat at Durley Chine.

“The lifeboat was soon on scene however found that the person was now safely ashore, so the lifeboat was stood down and returned to station and was made ready for service by 3pm.

“Later that evening at 7pm the lifeboat was tasked again by UK coastguard to a 38ft yacht that was aground on Hook Sands with two people on-board and a dog, the stricken vessel had put out a mayday, other vessels had responded and had attempted to assist.

“The lifeboat was soon on scene and attached a line, as the vessel was still bobbing the lifeboat gave it a gentle nudge and it floated free.

“A crewmember was transferred onboard the yacht to check that all was well and that there was no ingress, the crewmember also talked the skipper through the chart, to help them safely navigate back through the harbour.

“The lifeboat escorted the yacht to East Looe, then it continued to Cobbs Quay and the lifeboat returned to station.

“The lifeboat was made ready for service and refuelled, the lifeboat crew also did a fuel run to prepare for a busy weekend ahead and looking ahead as visitors flock to the coast this weekend, with the warm weather set to continue, please take care, if you do find yourself in trouble in the water remember ‘float to live’ by leaning back in the water, extending your arms and legs, and resisting the urge to thrash around, and to gain control of your breathing, always raise your hand and shout for help.”
