THE future of our region – Monday’s Echo front page.
The council no longer build houses to rent. Private enterprise builds houses for a sale at a profit. Desperate to sell their land for money so they can go and retire somewhere more agreeable, profit-hungry land owners and developers want to see more than 43,200 new houses built in our local area including building on the green belt that they also own.
Since public and private housebuilding got under way here in the 1950s, supported by a councillor’s statement “People have got to live somewhere” why don’t they dig it all up and start again by building upwards like they do in Japan and rent them out? One home on top of another. This is a far more economic way to build than our silly method where we build homes each with its tiny patches of green open to the sky.
You could start your new method at one end of a street and move the existing streets residents into your first skyscraper leaving you the rest of the road to dig up and develop in your own good time
