SCORES of angry residents have now lodged objections to proposals to redevelop the Thistle Hotel site on Poole Quay

The plans were formally submitted last year.

Dubbing it “Fisherman’s Dock”, MHA London first unveiled its scheme in May, 2020, but lodged finalised plans with BCP Council last October.

Its finalised plans would see a mixed use scheme of five buildings including a 118-bed hotel with top floor restaurant, 228 flats, 270 parking spaces and quay-fronting commercial space.

The Thistle Hotel site, including the car park to the north and derelict land to the east, is allocated in the Poole Local Plan for housing and a new hotel.

Before that, the “underutilised” land was the subject of four failed planning applications in 2004, 2008 and 2009.

Dozens of people have expressed their opposition to the latest proposals on BCP Council's planning portal.

Among them, Eleanor Hammond-Warren, of Stanley Road, Poole, said: "The scale and mass of the development is far too large.

"It is not in keeping with the character of the quay conservation area.

"Any development on the site should be sensitive to the heritage of the area and the scale should be in line with the old warehouse buildings at the east of the quay at their absolute maximum.

"The density of people proposed to be located in this area is a huge over subscription of the land. It will in no way enhance the economy in the area, nor it's current residents.

"It will bottle-neck a huge number of vehicles and people into one very small area of land.

"This is overdevelopment on a significant scale directly on Poole Quay."

Meanwhile, Vicki Sheen, of Harkwood Court, Poole, simply said: "This is a tragic, ugly blight on Poole."

And Doreen Wretham, of Newlyn Way, Poole, said: "Far too dense and too high for quayside development.

"Not in keeping with atmosphere and mainly pedestrian use of this end of quay.

"Quality of historic connection to the sea and working boats will be lost making it more like Docklands or Canary Wharf."

Speaking last year with the submission of the plans, MHA head of development Andi Kercini said: "The proposals we have submitted will transform this site into a prime destination.

"A new boutique hotel, apartments with great views across the harbour and a thriving cultural and commercial space will all contribute to a spectacular regeneration for Poole.”

The application remains under consideration by BCP Council.
