POOLE Quay has been closed off to cars and other motor vehicles “for the foreseeable”.

Wooden plant boxes and a bollard have been installed outside of the Custom House Café, preventing vehicles from driving down the promenade.

These match the ones seen on the junction of High Street and New Street/Castle Street.

The road is only open for loading vehicles from between 10pm and 10am. Otherwise the road is only open to pedestrians, cyclists and scooters.

Bournemouth Echo:

Poole Police said: “Poole Quay is closed to motor vehicles. As far as we know this is for the foreseeable.

“We have noticed a lot of vehicles heading to drive down and then having to turn around.

“Motorcycles are motor vehicles and should not be travelling along the Quay at this time.

“As the sign says, only loading and unloading for the businesses is permitted and only at certain times.

“If you see motor vehicles breaching this you can send us video footage online using ‘Operation Snap’ and we can deal with road traffic offences.”

Plans to make the high street and quay pedestrianised permanently during the summer months were put forward by BCP Council back in May 2021.

Bournemouth Echo: A NOT SO SUNNY DAY: A day out on Poole Quay was ruined by out of use toilets, noisy motorbikes and the low tide

At the time, many business owners and visitors in the area condemned the scheme, saying that the closure with deter would-be customers from visiting the area.

However, a report from the final five months of the consultation showed that 64 per cent of people, and more than half of businesses in the area, supported the idea.
