A LYMINGTON man has vowed to change his name to that of a cartoon dog to raise money for charity.

Support Worker Dave Moodie, 35, has promised to change his first and middle name for one year by deed poll to whatever is voted for by people that donate to a support dog charity.

The charity - Hearing Dogs for Deaf people pairs support dogs with deaf owners.

Dave said the move was inspired by his job at a supported living accommodation for people with hearing impairment.

He said: "It's a great charity and really does save lives.

"You always hear of people doing bake sales and bungee jumps for charity, but I wanted to do something a bit different."

He has vowed to change his name on his 36th Birthday on September 6 of this year.

The Just Giving fundraiser, named "My Name Your Choice" has currently surpassed its £600 target by £20.

Voters can pick from the following list of cartoon names: Scooby, Gromit, Snoopy, Lassie, Digby, Goofy, Snowy, Scrappy.

Dave said the currently favourite is Digby Goofy, though that could still change.

Kevin Moore, Branch Organiser of the South Hants branch of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People said: "[Our dogs] help deaf people and alert them to important and life-saving sounds they would otherwise miss – sounds that many people take for granted like the doorbell, alarm clock and even danger signals like the fire alarm.

"Being aware of these, thanks to a hearing dog, can make a real difference to a deaf person’s life and can even save their lives.

"Hearing dogs help deaf people leave loneliness behind and reconnect with life through companionship and awareness."
