Dorset Police data has revealed that incidents of domestic abuse have risen from 704 in June 2019 to 961 in June 2021, an increase of nearly 37%.

However, the force say they have worked to improve their crime recording and increase confidence in reporting.

A spokesperson said: “This has resulted in an increased flagging of incidents as domestic abuse crimes as well as increased confidence of victims to come forward and report matters to police or partner agencies.”

Dorset police figures show that, while reports of domestic abuse crimes have seen a slight reduction over the past 12 months, there has been an increase in domestic related incidents of around 28 per cent.

Domestic incidents are matters that do not reach the criminal threshold.

Police said: “We are committed to working with partner agencies to ensure we provide the best possible service to victims of domestic abuse in Dorset and ensuring offenders are held accountable for their actions.”

“Tackling domestic abuse and supporting victims is a key priority for us as a force.”
