SHAFTESBURY Town Council is to be allowed to demolish 'redundant' public loos at Coppice Street, near the town football club.

It says the WCs  have not been used for 17 years and the space could be used for additional parking.

Work to demolish the toilets could begin in early August with the site re-formed to become part of the car park.

The application for demolition led to an objection from town councillor Derek Beer who says the loos would only require a little work to bring them up to modern standards – which, he claims, Tesco were supposed to do when given planning permission for their store.

He says that with only one other public toilet in the town, in the Bell Street car park, the Coppice Street loos ought to be replaced elsewhere, if they are to be demolished.

The demolition also includes the removal of a large tree to the rear of the town football club and the installation of a new street light close to the existing car park ticket machine.

The area is expected to be used for motorcycle parking.
