HUNDREDS of people saddled up for the 33rd Dorset bike ride in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Around 350 people took on the charity ride of varying distances, including 100 miles, 63 miles, 48 miles and 38 miles.

The ride started and ended at Corfe Mullen Recreation Ground and was expected to raise more than £35,000.

Taking on the challenge was Helen Timms whose friend was going through treatment for breast cancer.

Helen, 53, said: “I got into cycling when I attempted my first triathlon for my 50th and joined Purbeck Peloton Cycling Group, one of the members is unfortunately going through treatment for breast cancer.

“There’s about eight of us all riding together to support her and raise money for a good cause.

“There’s so many people going through such a difficult time and going through a lot of pain and suffering, I think it’s really nice to be able to support them and think about others, it’s a really good cause.

“After lockdown, cycling has really kept my wellbeing and mental health in a reasonable state so it’s nice to see everyone else at the event.”

Steve Cox, 68, was tackling the challenge in memory of his brother’s wife and wife’s sister who both died of cancer.

He said: “My brother’s wife died about 18 years ago of a myeloma and my wife’s twin sister died of a brain tumour three years ago.

“It’s nice to do something for their memory, try and give something back and try and get rid of this terrible disease.”

Peter Smith-Nicholls, of Macmillan, said: “It’s our 33rd event and we’re really pleased to get it going.

“Even with four weeks to get it organised we’ve had over 300 cyclists turn up today.

“It’s really good to put the event on again, a lot of people are eager to get out. The 100-mile ride goes right off to the north-west of Dorset.

“Thanks to our sponsors who covered the cost of the event, the money we raise will go to help people living with cancer in our area.”
