THE chief executive of University Hospitals Dorset has thanked a range of organisations to mark the 73rd birthday of the NHS this weekend.

In a video message, Debbie Fleming who is in charge of Bournemouth and Poole hospitals, said everyone in the NHS was very grateful for the clapping and appreciation in the past 17 months but added: "I would like to turn the tables and thank all of you who have supported us."

Ms Fleming praised the work of the "great army of volunteers, helping out across our sites.

"These volunteers make a tremendous difference for our patients, staff and visitors and we really appreciate all their commitment and dedication."

She said many local businesses had sent in goods, gifts and offered discounts on their services.

"I know how much this has been appreciated across our hospitals. We know how tough lockdown will have been for many businesses, but despite this, we have seen so much kindness and generosity to our staff."

She also paid tribute to the local media.

"Thank you for reflecting what life was like in our hospitals so that the public could understand what was going on - and for helping us to explain why we had to make certain changes as we have sought to maintain safe patient care."

Teachers, hospital governors and partner organisations were also singled out for appreciation.

She added: "I know how important it has been to have the support of family and friends over the past year, so I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have been doing this for our staff – helping to keep those who work here safe and supported throughout the pandemic."

Ms Fleming also recorded her appreciation for all colleagues at UHD, both clinical and non-clinical.

"Whatever their role, whether they have come on site or supported colleagues from home, they have made such an important contribution as we have worked to maintain essential services.

"You have all been amazing in your support and care for all our patients and for each other. I couldn't be prouder of you."
