A BOURNEMOUTH woman who is wheelchair bound has been supported in her quest to access more areas than her wheelchair permits thanks to a handmade unicorn.

Jojo Povey, from Bournemouth, has been a wheelchair user for 17 years and is keen to explore more places, but her current wheelchair would struggle to access these areas.

The price for freedom is not cheap, as Jojo's ideal chair, the Trekinetic GTE ultra lightweight powerchair, which can go off-road, costs £10,000.

Jojo's friend Patricia Medcalf, from Teignmouth, Devon, has volunteered her services to help Jojo fundraise by crafting a 63cm high unicorn to be sold.

Patricia's husband, Peter said: "Patricia created the unicorn because Jojo loves bright, fluffy, girlie things and believes in unicorns, despite my persuasions otherwise.

"Patricia suffers seriously from Fibromyalgia and PTSD and enjoys to create handmade items including clothing for family and friends, soft toys for friends who use them as gifts, jewellery and other crafts when Fibromyalgia permits.

"She sewed the unicorn for Jojo to auction as part of her wheelchair funding. Patricia likes to gift people things and since we moved to Teignmouth in 2011 Jojo is the first real friend Patricia has made, and sewing and laughter are the common interests.

"Being able to purchase a Trekinetic GTE powerchair will not only enable Jojo to visit areas such as beaches, moors, forests and more that are usually inaccessible to ordinary chairs, but also allow her to accompany her husband on his triathlon competitions and adventures."

The unicorn is made from a fleece fabric body, with 100 per cent cotton parts, faux leather eyes with secured eye parts.

The horn and wings are vinyl fabric, the mane is wool and the body is stuffed with high grade hollow fibre polyester stuffing.
