THE ‘revelation’ over this last weekend that former Speaker of the House of Commons, John ‘The Squeaker’ Bercow has relinquished his membership of the Conservative Party and joined the Labour Party really is old news.

Bercow, to all intents and purposes, joined the Labour Party on the day that he became Speaker – with total disregard for the well-established and important tradition that the occupant of that High Office puts aside his/her political allegiance and remains unbiased and impartial at all times.

No Speaker in recent history did more to betray the principles of his position – than Little John.

Time after time, after time, he showed his bias and indeed it will forever remain a mystery as to how he managed to be re-elected to the high office for which he was totally unsuited, no less than four times.

Bercow’s tenure as Speaker is the most potent argument for dumping the unwritten convention that the Speaker cannot be removed from office.
