MAKING BCP area a Clean Air Zone is well overdue.

We are hitting the national media for poor air quality.

Nothing has been done about the ten year old Air Quality Management Areas in Poole, and the real time air quality index whose only monitors are in Christchurch and Bournemouth, frequently show levels that keep large sections of the population indoors.

If you don’t know anyone with a heart condition or asthma you won’t know what I mean, but anyone with these conditions is well aware when it is a high pollution day, even if they don’t know that that is what is making their symptoms worse.

Meanwhile, Clean Air Zones are being brought in all over the country in Bath, Bristol, Manchester, London and many more places.

Where I might ask, will all the dirty old diesel vehicles, including taxis, that can’t now be used in these places, be heading?

I’ll tell you where. Outside our primary schools idling away happily and uninhibited for school runs, waiting for school buses for pick ups, sitting under people’s windows in taxi ranks all night and left running by delivery drivers who dare not turn them off in case they stall these old dinosaurs.

What happened to Bournemouth’s old tourist slogan of Health and Pleasure?

The government has been pouring money into grants for electric taxis for years.

Why isn’t any of the benefit of this being felt in our towns?
