A WHOPPING 770 motorists are banned from our roads each week in the UK due to drink-driving.

Ahead of pubs, bars and restaurants reopening next week, it's crucial to know the rules on driving before heading out to your local boozer.

Between January 1 and May 20, 8,476 motorists were banned from driving due to drink driving.

That means on average 770 people a week have been banned from driving in 2021 due to drinking under the influence, and that was before the pubs even opened.

With many people about to return to the pubs for the very first time, car experts Moneyshake, have gathered all the information you need to know to ensure you don’t find yourself with an unwanted fine, ban on your license or even in a serious accident for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Take a look below at your favourite drink to see just how many units are in each serving:

  • Pint of Carling - 2.3 units
  • 25ml shot of Smirnoff vodka - 1 unit
  • Pint of Strongbow - 3 units
  • 25ml shot of Gordon's pink gin - 1 unit
  • 25ml shot of Captain Morgan's spiced rum - 1 unit
  • 25ml shot of Jack Daniels - 1 unit
  • 175ml glass of Jack Rabbit Pinot Grigio - 2.3 units
  • Pint of Sharp's Doom Bar - 2.3 units
  • 330ml can of Camden Hells lager - 3 units
  • 275ml bottle WKD Blue - 1.5 units

Driving under the influence could see you with a driving ban of at least 12 months (three years if you are convicted twice within 10 years), an unlimited fine and even imprisonment for six months.

Refusing to provide a specimen of breath, blood or urine for analysis could result in the same consequences.

"But this is not all it means for those who have broken this law. A conviction for drink-driving also means that your car insurance costs will increase significantly in the future. If you drive for work, your employer will see your conviction on your licence. And you may be denied access to travel to countries like the USA or get a visa to live abroad.” said car expert, Eben Lovatt CEO of Moneyshake.

“So make sure that, if you plan on driving, that you stick to non-alcoholic drinks when you are out in order to keep everyone safe and avoid the serious consequences. It really is as simple as if you’re driving don’t drink and if you are tempted to have a drink leave the car at home.”

Know your units

Units are the simple way in which we measure the alcohol in a drink. We can work it out using the standard measure Alcohol By Volume (ABV).

You can find the ABV of your drink by looking for the label on the can and bottle that you are drinking. We suggest if you are drinking out of a glass at a pub that you ask the bar staff to check this for you if you’re unable to find this out.

The alcohol limit is 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.
