PARENTS have been warned of a trend on social media labelling Saturday, April 24 as ‘national sexual assault and rape day’.

Rumours have circulated on social media app TikTok that April 24 is ‘national rape day’ encouraging sexually assaulting women, however this is a hoax.

A group reportedly started the rumour, giving tips on how to “get away with it”, prompting people to urge their friends to stay vigilant and safe on Saturday.

And parents at Twynham School were informed of the hoax by deputy head Karen Dadds.

She said: “We wanted to inform you of a safeguarding concern that we have been made aware of by our community police and local safeguarding team.

“The police have informed us that they are seriously concerned about the current TikTok trend that is being circulated between young people. The account is stating that Saturday is a ‘national sexual assault and rape day‘.

“We are sharing this information with you and ask that you discuss this with your young person, firstly to reassure them this is a hoax but also to encourage them to speak to their head of year if they have any concerns or related information whilst making sure they are not involved in perpetuating the rumour or sharing the threat.

“We have been advised that all cases of students sharing or bullying their peers in this way should be referred to the police.

“You may be aware that a recently opened website ‘everyone’s invited’ has attracted huge attention due to the sharing of testimonials from students about sexual abuse and harassment in schools.

“Whilst we have not been implicated in this report, we will continue to remain vigilant, review our policies and practices to ensure students feel safe and confident that they will be supported and listened to if they make us aware of their concerns.”

Dorset Police said the situation was being closely monitored and would “respond strongly” to evidence of the hoax.

A Dorset Police spokesperson said: “Dorset Police is aware of the alleged existence of social media content relating to an offensive online group encouraging the rape of women.

“There is no evidence that supports the existence of the group. However, the matter is being very closely monitored, and if evidence emerges, the police and partners will respond strongly.”
