BOURNEMOUTH’S beaches could see pop-up restaurants and bars make an appearance this summer.

Five separate licence applications have been submitted to BCP Council seeking permission to serve food and drink along the seafront.

Two of the applications seek licences for sections of the beach that are not licensed – one at East Cliff and the other for Toft Beach.

The council said the five licences would “enable outdoor pop-up catering sites” to be opened “across the seafront”.

However, Alan Dove, chairman of Bournemouth Townwatch, said the sale of alcohol would lead to issues of anti-social behaviour and crime across the area as experienced last year.

This week, all five applications will be determined at two meetings of the council’s licensing committee.

The first taking place today will include the two new licences while the remainder will be considered on Wednesday.

Hundreds of Echo readers have had their say on the plans. Here’s a selection of some of the comments that have been posted on the Bournemouth Echo website and Facebook page.

1. Utter stupidity inviting more and more trouble. Alan Dove is one hundred per cent right. The companies making these application are a greedy bunch of idiots. The police and other services have enough problems already.

2. Brilliant idea. Keep up the good work, other countries have taken this on for years. It should become a more permanent fixture. Let's get the hospitality sector back in business.

3. A great idea so long as local companies get the chance to run the kiosks and as part of the contract they must also provide and maintain, or finance, some temporary toilet provision nearby. The long stretch between the two piers is without any public wcs at present.

4. This is a great idea. So many moaners on this site it's unbelievable. If you don't like it don't go to the area. Simple. Let people have some fun in life. Times have been hard enough so this is a great idea for those that want to participate. I hope they all get approved.

5. What a load of nanny state, dull, glass is half empty people live here. There are still many miles of beach for you, bar free. From Southbourne to Barton on sea, from Branksome to Shell Bay. You have the beach to yourselves practically tourist free half the year too. This will be fun and vibrant and still less bars than Brighton has and they have it all year round. If people can’t buy alcohol at the beach, they will do a repeat of last year and visit the local Tesco, it will make no difference to numbers of drunks. At least the beaches won’t be full of so many thousands of discarded beer cans and drinking will be more congregated to specific areas rather than throughout. It's about time Bournemouth caught up with other large urban areas. This sounds fun.

6. Litter is already bad already, as long as it leads to more bins and more bin collections.

7. NO!!! Last year you couldn’t control people that visit the beach and left our beach in a mess and that was without bars and restaurants! Personally I think this will damage Bournemouth image, like someone already said keep it more family and children friendly.

8. Need more bars and outdoor places to eat along the beach, will save people queuing for hours to get something and will prob help with litter because people won’t have to bring so much with them.

9. NO NO it would spoil the beach. The beach is for children to play safe and adults relax. Its stupid to be drinking then getting in the water . Think of all the rubbish that would be left around.

10. Why do they need this, it’s been fine for generations so why change it, you are just making it easier for people to become reliant on pop up shops & not doing things yourself, we are already a lazy generation.

11. Make them responsible for cleaning their stretch of beach and then why not.

12. Be good if they use the reusable cups that require a deposit or you can keep like you get at festivals.

13. It's a double egded sword idea. Dreamy and romantic almost in its notion but the reality of people is rowdiness, drunkenness, crowds, intimidation rubbish galore and extra policing not to mention all the extra toilets required. This will just put off other groups of families. Is a nice idea in theory but in practice think it will fail due to the nature of people. Sandbanks a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday night. Last year in down the beach thousands with drink everywhere was just plain awful.

14. June to September as in Spain, works well there , then locals get their beach back.

15. Certainly not. Open the normal bars and restaurants, no need for additional ones.

16. Seems a good idea. It'll bring a bit of a European feel to our beaches. This is similar to the chiringuitos that are along the beaches in Spain.
