AMONG the reasons I have been given when being pestered to have a smart meter is that meter readers cannot be sent to houses because of Covid.

This is believable when it comes to electricity. As regards a gas smart meter, this is clearly ridiculous.

Nearly all gas meters are outside dwellings. It occurs to me that it is dangerous to always read gas readers remotely.

There is widespread theft of gas carried out through by-passing meters.

This can only be detected visually because, if a smart meter signals a period with no gas usage, it could just be that the dwelling is not being used.
