This story has been updated with the correct information supplied by BCP Council after the public notice incorrectly stated the road would be closed for 18 months.

A BUSY Wimborne road will close over night for five nights to ensure a “safe working area” along the road.

Leigh Road is set to close to all vehicles overnight later this month.

A public notice from Dorset Council said: “All vehicles will be prohibited from proceeding along Leigh Road, Wimborne between Parmiter Drive and Gordon Road, a distance of approximately 330 metres.

“The Order is needed in order to comply with health and safety regulations which require provision of safe working areas and to minimise the likelihood of danger to highway users.

“This Order will enable Dorset Council to carry out carriageway resurfacing works in relation to the Transforming Cities Fund.

“A locally signed diversion route will be put in place to enable traffic to travel around the closed sections.

“If you would like further information about the work being undertaken and access arrangements, please call Dorset Highways on 01305 228100.”

A spokesperson for BCP Council, involved in the Transforming Cities Fund scheme responsible for these roadworks, said: "Leigh Road, Wimborne will be closed overnight around the junction with Brook Road from the evening of April 26 to the morning of May 1.

"The overnight closures will be from 8pm in the evening until 6am the following morning. During the night-time closures a diversion using the A31 Wimborne Bypass will be in place.

"The closures are part of the improvement works currently underway on Leigh Road and Wimborne Road West in Wimborne and Colehill. It is necessary for the safe installation of the traffic control systems, the new parallel crossing and new layout at the Brook Road Junction.

"During the night-time closures a diversion using the A31 Wimborne Bypass will be in place and local access may be temporarily restricted.

"Any residents needing special consideration for deliveries or mobility should contact the dedicated TCF Dorset Direct hotline on 01305 221025 before the closures begin."

The roadworks on Leigh Road are of plans to establish a 78km green travel route – including cycleways and walking routes – connecting Poole town centre with Wimborne and Ferndown.

Construction started in January on the initial 2.3km section, representing the first part of the route.

At the time, councillor Ray Bryan, Dorset Council’s portfolio holder for highways, travel and environment, said: “We are dedicated to ensuring we can all enjoy a cleaner, greener and healthier place to live, work, and visit.

“Putting the needs of the community front and centre, the project aims to support safe alternatives to the car and improve the user experience for everyone.”
