ONE of Bournemouth's busiest roads will soon close in one direction for a whole month – and motorists are being advised to avoid the area if they can.

Wallisdown Road will be closed to eastbound traffic for approximately four weeks from Tuesday, April 6, as part of the next phase of major infrastructure works.

And from Monday, March 29, until Friday, April 2, the final phase of roadworks at Boundary Roundabout will also be taking place.

This will require overnight closures of the roundabout in all directions from 7pm to 7am each night.

Councillor Mike Greene, BCP Council portfolio holder for transport and sustainability, said: “The Wallisdown corridor is the focus of several infrastructure improvement and investment schemes, which commenced last year and are progressing on time and to schedule.

"In advance of the latest works, please plan ahead and consider whether it might be possible to avoid driving through this area."

This is all part of a scheme BCP Council is working on which aims to improve safety and encourage more people to walk, cycle or use public transport.

Council officials say it will deliver safer, cycle and pedestrian facilities at Boundary Roundabout and adjoining roads, including Talbot Avenue, Boundary Road, Wallisdown Road and Gillett Road.

It commenced last summer and is being completed on schedule.

Cllr Greene said: “Improving access along this key route, these schemes are enhancing sustainable transport links across our conurbation.

"This will help to support local economic recovery and reduce journey times, while also contributing positively towards our wider transforming travel initiative and declared climate and ecological emergency.’’

Construction works will be focusing on south side of Wallisdown Road West between Mountbatten Arms Roundabout and the western end of Benbow Crescent.

A diversion will be in place for eastbound traffic via Ringwood Road, Wimborne Road and the A347.
