MUCH attention has been drawn to the issue of street-based drinking along Ashley Road in Poole in particular, on the shop front of G&T Cards.

The council and police are aware of these concerns from the public and are working in partnership to tackle the issue.

The police have stepped up patrols to this part of the road and the immediate vicinity.

Action has been taken with one individual arrested for a Public Order Offence and a Section 35 dispersal notice in place for a 24 hour period.

The council has a dedicated CSAS (security officer) that covers Ashley Rd, who carries out more targeting patrols in this area.

The council also has outreach workers that engage with those who are rough sleeping and provide the necessary assistance to help them into housing and move on.

Some individuals can have complex needs which could take longer to address.

With reference to the PSPO consultation, I want to be clear that the current consultation relates to alcohol fuelled anti-social behaviour.

It is intended to help ensure that the law-abiding majority can use and enjoy public spaces safe from anti-social behaviour.

It is not an alcohol ban for public spaces and it does not make it an offence to drink alcohol in the area covered by the order.

However, it is an offence to fail to comply with a request from an officer to cease drinking or surrender alcohol in the area covered by the order, if the individual is or is likely to cause anti-social behaviour.

I want to reassure our residents that this PSPO consultation is not about rough sleeping or aggressive begging.

Each case is different and each individual has different needs and circumstances.

The council will continue to work with partners on these issues.
