POLICE have issued a warning over pay-as-you-go insurance policies after stopping a young driver in Boscombe.

The driver, who also failed a roadside drugs test for cannabis, told officers he had forgotten to obtain cover that day.

And now he fears he will be unable pursue his dream of joining the fire service.

Officers from the Dorset Police No Excuse team stopped the Fiat in Boscombe on March 5.

A spokesman said: "We stopped this vehicle in Hamworthy last week, it was all in order, but it was noted the driver paid a 'pay as you go insurance policy' which was a daily on cover policy.

"The driver decided this was the best way to insure himself, deciding to not name himself as a named driver on his mums policy. This is risky, as you need to remember to put yourself on cover each day - which is exactly what he didn’t do."

After failing the drugwipe, the driver was arrested and taken into custody where he provided a blood sample which has been sent away for analysis.

The driver, who also provided a positive drugwipe for cocaine in November, only got his licence in August last year and has already been involved in a collision.

The vehicle was seized and the driver faces disqualification.
