OH DEAR ... no Christine Peters, the answer is not to stop reading reviews, but to first of all look at the number of stars the item has received.
You don’t mention which online outlets you are browsing, but it seems that you are looking at things with one or no stars.
Once you have found an item you like the look of, you can then read the reviews and bad reviews are very helpful.
Personally, if a particular item has less than four stars, I don’t bother with it and carry on searching for similar products with more favourable reviews.
