GOALS from Sam Surridge and Junior Stanislas sent Cherries into the last eight of the FA Cup for the first time since 1957.

Cherries academy graduate Surridge tapped home in the first half and Stanislas netted from the penalty spot late on, to give caretaker boss Jonathan Woodgate his second win in charge with a 2-0 triumph over Burnley.

Victory in Lancashire put Cherries into the hat for the quarter-final draw on Thursday night.

Woodgate handed a first Cherries appearance to midfielder Ben Pearson, who was making his return to Lancashire having joined the Dorset club from Preston North End last month.

There were six changes to the line-up which overcame Birmingham City in the Championship last time out. Academy graduate Christian Saydee was among the substitutes.

Burnley had to overcome some late drama regarding their team selection head of kick-off.

They named defender Erik Pieters in their original line-up – despite the full-back being suspended having picked up two bookings in the competition.

In came Anthony Glennon in his place ahead of kick-off, with Sean Dyche’s side a man light on the bench.

Cherries fired the first shot in anger with 10 minutes on the clock.

After Kevin Long’s headed clearance fell to Junior Stanislas on the edge of the box, the former Burnley man steered wide of the post with a low, driven effort.

The hosts then responded. A neat flick from Johann Gudmundsson found Jimmy Dunne in space on the right flank. He cut back into the path of Dale Stephens, but the former Brighton ace blazed over the bar.

Midfielder Philip Billing was operating further forward for Cherries on the night and almost broke the deadlock.

After Surridge was released by Stanislas to spark a counter-attack, he pulled the ball back for the Danish international, who saw his powerful strike clip the side netting.

But it was Surridge who opened the scoring for Cherries on 21 minutes.

After David Brooks found the overlapping Jack Stacey on the right, the flying full-back delivered a low cross in for the England under-21 striker to tap home.

Cherries then almost had a second. A corner swung in by Brooks came off the head of Stephens, who almost turned into his own net but for a smart stop from keeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

Stephens then appeared to trip Billing in the box in the aftermath – but nothing was given by referee Darren England.

Cherries were forced into a change at the interval with Chris Mepham replacing Stacey – Cameron Carter-Vickers switched to right-back.

Burnley had two good chances to level shortly after the break.

After Matej Vydra forced a fine save from Asmir Begovic at his near post, Josh Benson headed wide from the resulting corner.

Dwight McNeil then stung the palms of the Bosnian stopper with an effort from range, which squirmed away to safety.

The Clarets continued to push forward. Dunne’s cross allowed Vydra to swipe at goal, his effort fell to Rodriguez, who ballooned an effort over unchallenged from close range.

But the tie was sealed in Cherries’ favour with two minutes remaining. A searching ball from deep was played off the back of Billing – Surridge went to ground in the box under the challenge of Long.

Referee England pointed to the spot and up stepped Stanislas to strike home from 12 yards.
