AN elderly woman died of injuries suffered in an accidental fall at home more than a month earlier, an inquest has heard.

Edna Joyce Fox of Cranfield Avenue, Wimborne, had a home carer at the time of her fall – but this carer had been out of the room when the frail 86-year-old had her tumble.

On Wednesday, December 30, at Dorset Coroner's Court, Bournemouth Town Hall, an inquest was held into Mrs Fox's death.

Coroner Rachael Griffin, who presided over the hearing, read statements from the deceased's daughter, Kathy Fox, and medical professionals.

Evidence in statement form was also heard from the live-in care company, Candlelight Care.

Mrs Griffin said: "It was seem she (Mrs Fox) was a remarkable lady.

"She was a lady who had a very supportive family around her and it is clear to me that she was very caring and dedicated to her family, as they were to her."

The hearing heard how Mrs Fox had worked as a legal secretary for six years until 1996, when she suffered a brain haemorrhage.

She was later diagnosed with dementia in 2013, which affected her short-term memory.

Evidence was also heard that Mrs Fox had been an established and talented pianist.

Mrs Griffin, who noted Mrs Fox started receiving help from from a live-in carer in July 2020, said: "She was a lady who was prone to falls, she was a lady who had become frail over time, and she had needed additional support and care.

"On September 4, 2020, in the morning, while her carer was out of the room, Mrs Fox fell in the bedroom of her home address.

"I am satisfied there was nobody else involved in that fall and that fall was a spontaneous event, an accident."

Paramedics took her to Poole Hospital where she had a CT scan which showed a subdural haemorrhage.

Mrs Fox was discharged back home with end of life care on September 29, and died on October 15 with family at her side, the hearing heard.

The medical cause of death was recorded as intracranial haemorrhage and vascular dementia.

Recording a conclusion of accidental death, Mrs Griffin said: "There was a significant deterioration following that accidental fall at home on September 4.

"I am satisfied she died from the injuries she sustained from that accidental fall."
