DORSET Police is reviewing complaints received after footage of a vehicle stop check in Bournemouth attracted a lot of attention on social media.

The video, which was posted on YouTube and shared widely, related to an incident near the BIC on the evening of Friday, October 30.

A statement from Dorset Police said the officer involved in the stop check had not been suspended at present.

The video, which has been viewed more than 280,000 times and was filmed from inside the car that had been stopped, initially shows a verbal exchange between the officer and the driver of the vehicle.

At one point the male officer is seen to pull out his baton and he goes on to arrest the driver.

The driver was de-arrested at the scene and police confirmed no action had been taken at present.

The video, which appears to cover a period of more than 20 minutes, begins with the officer questioning the colour of the vehicle as being different from what is registered.

The statement from Dorset Police said: “We are aware of the video circulating online and we understand the public interest in it,” the statement said.

“At 7.55pm on Friday 30 October 2020 an officer carried out a stop check on a vehicle near to the Bournemouth International Centre due to concerns in relation to the driving standard and because the colour of the vehicle did not match the one on record.

“The driver was arrested, but de-arrested a short time later and no further action was taken at the time.

“We have received complaints from members of the public about the video and are reviewing those in compliance with our established complaints procedure.

“Our Professional Standards Department is reviewing the incident, which includes footage from the officer’s body worn video of events leading up to the interaction to assess the full picture as to whether any further action needs to be taken.

“The officer has not been suspended at this time.”
