BOURNEMOUTH University has issued a fresh warning to its students after learning of planned parties over the Halloween weekend.

The latest coronavirus correspondence to the university’s community from the institution’s senior team confirmed disciplinary action is already being pursued against a “number of students”.

BU has consistently said it will support both BCP Council and Dorset Police with action taken against any student found to be breaking Covid-19 regulations.

And ahead of both Halloween and Bonfire Night, traditionally popular social occasions for students, the university’s director of estates Stuart Laird said following social distancing and the ‘rule of six’ remain important.

In his update, which was posted online, Mr Laird said: “With Halloween this weekend, swiftly followed by Bonfire Night, I understand that you might want to go and celebrate these events. We have also heard about a number of student parties planned over the coming weekend.

“Therefore, I would like to reiterate the message from last week and ask you to avoid large gatherings at the current time. Alongside the police, BCP Council is also stepping up patrols across Bournemouth and both organisations are able to fine anyone failing to comply with the regulations.”

Weekly updates from BU provide an indication on the number of reported coronavirus cases among the establishment’s staff and students.

In the seven days up to Friday, October 30, there were 47 new positive cases across the whole BU population of 1,723 staff and 16,606 students.

The figure is the number of new cases reported to BU, regardless of location, with some people working and studying outside the BCP area.

BU said the cases are distributed throughout the university and there is no significant outbreak in any particular course, hall of residence or other part of the institution.

Mr Laird added: “As the vice-chancellor, Professor John Vinney, has previously said, the university will support action taken by the local council or the police against any student found to be breaking the law with regards to the Covid-19 regulations.

“We are also pursuing disciplinary action against a number of students.

“In addition, please consider the implication that breaking the law or the university’s regulations may have on your fitness to practise, if this is a requirement of your course.

“The infection rate in the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) area is sadly rising at the moment and I want you to protect yourselves, as well others, from the risk.”
