THANK you for wearing a face mask.

That's the message to people returning to Bournemouth ahead of face covering becoming compulsory in shops from Friday.

Initially, the Bournemouth Town Centre BID is funding 150 eye-catching shop window stickers encouraging visitors to abide by the rules, be considerate and do their bit to stop coronavirus spreading.

The blue stickers say 'Great To See You Shopping. Thank you for wearing a mask.'

Government ministers announced on July 14 the regulation would be mandatory in shops in England from the end of this week - although many people already use face masks.

It brings England into line with Scotland and other major European countries like Spain, Germany and Italy.

Those who fail to comply with the rules could face a £100 fine.

Chief operating officer of the Town Centre BID, Paul Kinvig, said everyone had a part to play in keeping others safe and helping to get shops and other businesses back up and running.

He said: "This has to be a real community effort. It's about a sense of responsibility towards other shoppers and more importantly, retail staff.

"Sadly sales assistants and cashiers have been among those worse affected by the virus among the general population.

"We all know that the number one issue for everyone is staying safe. And the future success of our town centres and high streets is very dependent on people having the confidence to return.

"The wearing of masks from Friday will really help with that reassurance. We are simply asking everyone to be considerate."

This latest initiative follows the success of the 300 blue pavement stickers the BID has provided across the town to help with queuing and social distancing."

The face mask window stickers are also free to levy payers.

Mr Kinvig added: "As residents and visitors return to the town centre, I would urge everyone coming in, please spend some money in the shops, cafes, pubs and indeed any business. They need your support."
