POOLE Sports Centre could be reopened if new management is found, claims the company called in to put the current operator into liquidation.

Poole-based UK Bankruptcy Ltd was called in by UK Sports Centres Ltd and bailiffs moved in on Thursday and began removing items.

But Sean Mason, a director at UK Bankruptcy Ltd, said: "It they can find a new operator for it there is no reason why it can't continue to trade."

A statement explained that while expensive gym equipment had been taken, most apparatus, including nets, had been left.

It adds: "Although it is disappointing for local residents that the centre has closed, the premises have been left with minimal disruption in order that a new operator can be found, in the hope that the centre can reopen with the potential for those members of staff being reinstated.

"We sincerely hope that AXA (the freeholders) are prepared to devote the necessary time to allow the centre to remain open with an interim manager until such time that a permanent solution can be found."

The bankruptcy company has made moves to stop membership direct debits, but recommended members cancel any standing orders with their banks.

It has also confirmed that the centre will be opened from 9am to 6pm on Sunday with a skeleton staff to allow a Dorset junior badminton tournament to take place. Members will also be able to pick up belongings in lockers.

Sara Dennehy, a spokesman for AXA Real Estate Investment Managers, which took on the property in May and leased it to UK Sports Centres Ltd, said: "It appears the business may have failed but we have not received formal notification."
