Night Watch, KCA Players, Kinson Community Centre

IT'S 5 am and a rich American woman, unable to sleep, is pacing her Manhattan sitting room. As she glances out of the window she sees, in the window of the building opposite, a dead body in a chair - but when the police investigate they find nothing, and dismiss her as neurotic.

That in itself is a good enough scenario for a thriller but this one, penned by Lucille Fletcher, doesn't stop there and has enough twists and turns to keep the audience in suspense right to the play's final denouement.

And this production, directed initially by Lonnie Watson prior to her knee replacement, then by Steve Watton, is incredibly well performed by its nine-strong cast and has the added benefit of an excellent set.

Denise King, in the lead role of Elaine Wheeler, gives what must be her best performance ever, and is absolutely believable. She also maintains a credible American accent, as do the majority of the cast. David Wickham gives strong support as her husband, John, while Rachel Huntley also does well as Elaine's friend, Blanche Cook.

There are also particu-larly delightful cameos from Carol Willison as German housekeeper, Helga, and Jack Snell as neighbour Curtis Appleby.
