Both shore and boat anglers continue to record some nice bass with 10-year-old Marcus Christopher winning a Boscombe and Southbourne SFC shore competition at Sandbanks.

The youngster's prize catch was a bass weighing 3lb while bass of 11lb and 8lb have been recorded from the Poole charter vessel 'Silver Spray'.

Young Christopher from Poole used ragworm to tempt his match winning bass during the event where fish were conspicuous by their absence, the other successful member was Paul Johnson who beached a 2-5 bass.

On Silver Spray' it was Donald Wilson who landed the 11lb bass while Harry Venables took the eight pounder. Both fish fell to mackerel baits fished in fairly shallow water off the Purbecks.

BROOKS IS BEST

The Swanage and District SAC Poppy Appeal catch-and-release open held on the local pier produced a smattering of pout and red mullet with Keith Brooks winning the event with 142cm followed by Geoff King 70cm and Graham Woods 44cm.

The club has also just staged a 24-hour fishing session again from the local pier to raise funds for the Children in Need Appeal.

During the event 14 differing species were recorded including an elusive codling, it is hoped that the seven members who took part in the event raised just over £1000 for the appeal.

DOWNER UP FOR WIN

Dave Downer romped to victory during the Lymington and District SFC open boat cod competition, which attracted 88 competitors after heaving a cod weighing 13-5 over the gunnels to collect the £250 top prize.

The event attracted 88 competitors with 21 returning just six cod to the scales along with a smattering of thorneback rays, codling spotted rays, turbot, brill, dogfish, wrasse, and whiting.

The second heaviest cod weighing 10-10 was recorded by Glen Short who collected £100 for his efforts followed by Glen Grieves 10-4, Robin Lane 9-15, Roy Will-iams 3-14 and Tony Wells 3-2.

The heaviest fish other than a cod was a 10-7 thorneback ray bagged by Roy Williams which won him £88 in pools, the team event was won by Roy Williams and Tony Wells who both landed a small codling each.

WOOLCOMBE RECORD

At the British Record Fish Committee's latest meeting it was confirmed that a 3lb 0oz 4drms golden grey mullet caught from the shore within the confines of Christchurch Harbour by David Woolcombe from Purewell has been ratified as a new British record.

Other sea fish to be ratified as new British records at the meeting were a Couch's Sea Bream 6lb 9oz 7drm (boat), Lemon Sole 3lb 14.drm (boat), Blue Runner 1lb 4oz (shore), Guinean Amberjack 2lb 2oz 9drm (shore), Almaco Jack 1lb 7oz 12drm (shore), Corkwing Wrasse 12oz 11drm (shore) and a Common Goby weighing just 1gm.

Two new British coarse records were also ratified at the meeting, a 9lb 5oz Chub and a 21lb 5oz Zander.

CLARK COLLECTS WIN

The third round of the Christchurch Angling Centre Midweek Open League held between Avon Beach and Highcliffe provided some fair sport with dogfish, pout, whiting and sole dominating.

Chris Clark won the event with 21 fish weighing 6-10 followed by Richard Pordum with 4-0. Pordum also scooped the pool for the heaviest round fish with a 1-10 dogfish and the flatfish pool with an 11oz sole.

Pete Miles came third with 3-12 followed by Brian Dawkins 2-15, Tom Bagnall 2-9 and Mark Turner 2-8.

MICK MAKES GOOD

Southsea was the setting for the Rovers Tackle latest midweek pegged catch-and-release open competition where smoothhound, bass, whiting and pout supplied the action.

Mick Goodger won the total length category with 318cm followed by Tim Lane 197cm and Dave Ware 162cm. The longest fish category was won by Dean Argent with a 44cm smoothhound followed by Del Brennan with a 44cm bass and Joe Thompson with a 32cm whiting.

Rovers Tackles final pegged midweek catch-and-release match of the year will be held at Lee-on-Solent on December 6 with fishing from 8pm to 11.30pm.

Tickets which are strictly pre-book only have been set at £5, there will be three cash prizes in the total length category and three cash prizes in the longest fish category.
