A HEAD teacher is considering asking parents who park dangerously outside his school explain their actions to the children.

David Blakeley, head teacher of Malmesbury Park Primary School in Lowther Road, Bournemouth, has tried various means to tackle the problem of parents parking on double yellow lines and zigzags outside the school, but without success.

Yesterday morning the Daily Echo saw 10 parents parking on double yellow lines, a further 10 parking on zigzags and two parents double parking.

Mr Blakeley said: "I am going to talk to the police community support officers about a scheme which would involve parents being offered the choice of either paying a fine for parking illegally or coming in to school to talk to the children.

"I read about this with relation to people speeding outside schools. Several people took what they thought would be the easy option of talking to pupils who asked them some hard-hitting questions. Some of the drivers came out of that in tears, having been made to think about their actions."

Mr Blakeley said he thinks that the school's various schemes designed to encourage children to cycle or scooter to school and to get the parents to park further away and walk a couple of minutes to school were reaching the majority of parents.

But he said: "We have a hardcore of parents who no matter what we say or do are going to do whatever they like.

"Some people are more concerned about themselves than even their own children," he added.

He does not accept parents being in a hurry as any excuse and said that he would rather children arrived in class a few minutes late than there were accidents outside school caused by reckless parents in a rush.

He added that he would welcome traffic wardens taking up residence outside the school issuing tickets to parents.

Mr Blakely said: "I don't want to beat parents with a stick but some parents are endangering the safety of lots of children."
