Marcus Brigstock, Tivoli, Wimborne

The man who plays the inadequate Giles Wembley Hogg on Radio 4 proved himself to be anything but inadequate with a storming night of comedy.

Hitting a variety of targets, from people from Norwich (I kept quiet when he asked if anyone in the audience was from there - it's bad enough supporting them) to 4x4 drivers, to Londoners, Brigstock was on great form and clearly enjoying the opportunity to entertain the rural Dorset crowd.

His political leanings, not necessarily sympathetic to middle class middle England proved surprisingly popular and he made great use of the local dilemma over the future of Wimborne's cricket pitch - "Must be hard to know which side to be on - a lovely cricket pitch that 22 men use and no one watches or a new Waitrose!" I suspect most of the audience agreed on that score.

George Bush took a hit, as did people who don't believe in global warming, but it was the Olympics that drew the greatest applause, with the straw poll of the audience proving that apathy wins again. Top quality entertainment from the host of the new Saturday Night Live, starting in December.
