DOGS will be subjected to spring and summer restrictions on several beaches across Dorset and the UK next week.

In previous years, dog owners were able to exercise their dogs in designated areas only.

Now, the government has told people not to travel to beaches to exercise their dogs during the COVID-19 pandemic and to stay local instead.

While restrictions are contained in public space protection orders to protect public health, Dorset Council has asked if they can be changed due to the coronavirus situation.

Cllr Tony Alford, Dorset Council’s Portfolio Holder for Customer, Community and Regulatory Services, said: “We recognise that many fewer residents will be visiting the beach at the present time due to the social distancing restrictions."

But the restrictions can only be changed following a legal process, including a public consultation.

He added: "While there should be many fewer dogs accessing the beach, the PSPOs remain in force and they are there for the safety of visitors.

"We are currently carrying out a consultation about them and I invite those who have not completed it, to do so.”

Dogs are usually allowed on certain parts of the beach from May 1 to September 30, which doesn't include the main Bournemouth beach.
