A POOLE care home housing more than 40 older people has been slated following an inspection.

Figbury Lodge in Mitchell Road, Canford Heath, was criticised and rated as Requires Improvement following a visit from the Care Quality Commission.

Inspectors raised concerns about many aspects of the provision including the management of medicines, lack of training for staff and record-keeping.

In a report just published they said the home had 44 residents, some living with dementia, at the time of the inspection.

"Potential risks to people's health and welfare had not been consistently assessed. Records of the care people received were not always accurate or complete or produced in a timely manner."

Inspectors said medicines were not always managed safely and said people's rights were not always protected under the Mental Capacity Act 2005.

The report goes on: "People's right to privacy was not always observed as records and confidential documents were not secured properly.

"People did not have end of life care plans in place which took account of their final wishes and preferences. Staff told us they did not always feel confident in their role due to lack of training."

On the positive side, they said residents and their families said staff are kind and caring and staff work well as a team.

They added: "The home was clean, tidy and people had access to enough food and drinks.

"Activities were held within the home and people told us they enjoyed them."

The home is run by the Shaw Healthcare group which has now been advised of improvements it needs to make. The CQC will now work alongside the provider to help make improvements at the home."

Mike Smith, Chief Operating Officer commented: “Whilst we are disappointed with the findings from this initial inspection of Figbury Lodge by the CQC Shaw Healthcare are committed to making the improvements required to ensure this flagship service delivers on our promise of delivering the type of care you would want for your loved ones.

“We are already progressing with our action plan and have been working closely with BCP Council to ensure the concerns highlighted in the inspection report are resolved and drive long term sustainable improvements in the care we offer.

"We are confident the issues highlighted will be rectified quickly and we look forward to seeing an improved report as a result of the changes we have made.”
