WITH blockbuster hits and indie sensations, the New Year cinema season at Lighthouse, Poole's centre for the arts, promises something for everyone.

Alongside box office favourites such as Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Sam Mendes' 1917 and the eagerly anticipated new adaptation of Emma, a wide range of independent movies are also set to be screened.

First up is Golden Globe-nominated Jojo Rabbit, directed by New Zealander Taika Waititi. The satirical black comedy follows a member of Hitler Youth who discovers his mother, played by Scarlett Johansson, is hiding a Jewish girl in their attic. What follows is the boy's deep questioning of his beliefs in an internationally successful film that also features Sam Rockwell, Alfie Allen, and Rebel Wilson.

Also in the line-up is Robert Eggers' psychological horror The Lighthouse. Shot in black and white, the chilling film - which was premiered at Cannes - sees Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson as lighthouse keepers who begin to lose their sanity after they are stranded on a remote island during a storm.

Next up is Monos, another festival hit directed by Colombian director Alejando Landes. With its violent story about a band of teenage guerilla bandits gone rogue, the film echoes the likes of Apocalypse Now and Lord of the Flies. At the other end of the scale is Waves, from Trey Edward Shults, a human drama about an African-American family navigating love, forgiveness and coming together as they cope with loss.

Further season highlights include two engaging documentaries: Somebody Up There Likes Me and Indian Space Dreams. The former, directed by Mike Figgis, is an intimate portrait of Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood, while the latter follows the scientists in Mumbai who launch India's first astronomical satellite.

More mainstream features include The Personal History of David Copperfield, which boasts a stellar cast of actors including Dev Patel, Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie and Peter Capaldi. Tom Hanks also steals the show as US TV icon Fred Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood.
