A 10-YEAR-OLD boy overcame adversity and horrendous weather conditions to complete charity cycle ride.

Jake Cooke-Price from Corfe Mullen raised £500 for Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance, a charity that receives no direct Government or National Lottery funding and relies on public donations for support.

Support was in abundance for Jake, with family, friends, local community and even the local darts club donating to the worthwhile cause.

Jake’s inspiration for his fundraiser stemmed from his love of TV shows like Air Ambulance ER that follow British medical teams as they take to the air in emergency situations.

Despite suffering with anaphylaxis, asthma and developmental coordination disorder, Jake was determined to cycle from Sandbanks to Bournemouth Pier and did so, despite the stormy conditions.

Jake chose to cycle because he loves doing it, but also because it posed him with a challenge.

“Cycling is a personal goal of Jake’s due to his medical conditions” explained Jake’s mum Gemma Heawood.

“When he first started he struggled with balance and kept bumping into things.”

Developmental coordination disorder is a condition that affects physical co-ordination.

It can impact everyday tasks such as tying shoelaces or going downstairs.

This did not prevent Jake from completing the 3.3 mile cycle in 33 minutes and 10 seconds in the horrendous weather.

Gemma said: “I’m very proud of Jake, he’s always been a caring child. He refused the option of riding on Sunday as lots of people had already donated.”

Continuing with the fundraiser on Saturday was a result of Jake not wanting to let his sponsors down and his perseverance to help others.

Jake has now been invited to an event in March 2020 by Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance where he will present the money he raised to the charity.
