“COS the one at Boscombe was such a success?”

That's just one of the hundreds of comments left by readers following the article about a proposed idea of a surfing reserve at Hengistbury Head.

The bid is to adjust the long groyne at Hengistbury Head to improve the replenishment of beaches further around the headland and, as a result, create favourable surfing conditions.

The company behind it says it has private funding of £30,000, subject to approval, from an environmental company, Canford Environmental, to fund a study looking at the coastal impact of the area. The cost of the full proposal is unknown.

Some readers and wave enthusiasts approved of the idea. Maurice Yard said: “What an amazing idea, would be great. I’m a bodyboarder who would definitely get in and enjoy it.

“I beach clean there all the time and all surfers respect the sea and its surroundings.”

Many readers mentioned that, as one of the most untouched regions of the Dorset coastline, the project would not be worth changing the landscape for and they would be better off leaving it alone.

Elaine Cox said: “The last place of natural beach left! It’s a beautiful place. Leave it alone, it’s a waste of money.

Other readers were concerned about the infrastructure of the area.

Jimmy Jones said: “As a commercial fisherman from Mudeford, I’m very against the idea. That’s our lobster fishing grounds, and a natural habitat for all kinds of sea life."

Many readers were quick to point out the failings of the Boscombe Reef built some ten years ago

Mandy Bradbury said: “Oh my gosh. Are the council trying to wreck the rest of our beautiful coastline? Did you not learn from the last ‘surf reef’? Sheesh.”

As reported, BCP Council said on Friday it had discussed the scheme and found it “interesting”, but it was not considering in changing policy. Yesterday, a spokesman said: “Works planned at Hengistbury Head are to stabilise and retain the long groyne as a key coastal defence structure only.

"Any suggestion of plans under consideration by BCP Council for this structure to be adapted for any other reason, are simply untrue.”
