A WOMAN who grew up on a farm before becoming a farmer herself has died of a cancer caused by asbestos.

Mary Elcock, 75, was diagnosed with biphasic malignant mesothelioma at Southampton General Hospital on July 26. She died at Poole Hospital on September 11.

An inquest into her death was opened and adjourned at the coroner's court in Bournemouth on Friday.

Coroner's officer Ken McEwan said Mrs Elcock had grown up on a farm which had asbestos roofs. She then married a farmer, the late Robert Elcock, who owned Walford Farm in Dean's Grove, Wimborne.

Asbestos buildings at the Wimborne farm were demolished in 1975.

A doctor from Poole Hospital provided her opinion as to the cause of Mrs Elcock's death as malignant mesothelioma and congestive cardiac failure.

A full inquest will take place in April next year.
