THOUSANDS of people packed the streets of Wareham yesterday to celebrate the town's 60th annual carnival.

Sunday's procession was one of the biggest in the event's history, with participants embracing the 'Dancing through the Decades' theme, young and old.

Pirates, superheroes, bikers, cavemen and even dinosaurs thrilled the crowds.

Wareham Carnival chairman Ian Davey said: "In a year that has seen so many local carnival events fall by the wayside due to lack of support, I am proud to be chairman of such a thriving family event, one that brings our community together.

Writing the the carnival programme, Mr Davey added: "We owe so much to our supporters and volunteers, and this year I want to pay particular tribute to two people who are no longer with us.

"Eric Osmond MBE who did so much for Wareham and its residents, and Jill Elliot, who loved and participated in so many carnivals bringing laughter and her own particular flair to each one."

After the procession made its way through the town centre, the party continued throughout the afternoon at the town's recreation ground.

Events such as a safari supper, a history walk, a disco at the rec, craft and flower show took place in the week leading up Sunday's procession.
