BRANKSOME Chine Surf Life Saving Club has been invited by Surf Life Saving GB to host the SLSGB Surf Life Saving Championships for 2019 and 2020.

This is the first time in the event history that a club outside of Devon or Cornwall has been given this opportunity to host the entire event.

The national championships regularly attract more than 1,500 competitors across age groups ranging from eight to eighty.

Club chairman Mark Dixon said: “We were thrilled when we were contacted and awarded the championship for 2019 and 2020.

"This is an exciting opportunity for everyone in the local area to see what we do.

"We hope that by raising the profile of what we do we can leave a lasting legacy for the area and make our club even more accessible to anyone keen to be part of this fantastic organisation.

"Our club has grown from nothing to over 250 members, with younger members getting essential water safety knowledge whilst older members are training regularly

learning the skills and techniques required to be Life guards and supporting the community. It is not uncommon for some members to go on to be GB athletes as the disciplines required are very aligned with top flight sports."

The 2019 championships take place from August 17.
