International Year of the child was marked in 1979 with celebrations around the world, locally three women from West Howe held their own Great Children's party for the local child. Organisers Susan Newlynn, Pauline Butterworth and Irene Wilkinson held party behind a garage forecourt on Englands Way, Fairway Park for 92 children with party food and games including eating marshmallows off a string.
