ARCHERY, fly fishing, air rifle and sling shot were just some of the activities on offer at a fundraising Country Challenge event.

Dorset disability charity Diverse Abilities hosted the day at Purbeck Shooting School, with 12 teams battling it out by taking part in a range of pursuits, including a clay 30 target flush and golf chip and put.

The winning team was the Bicton Bandits captained by David Darts, who also scored the only "hole in one" of the day.

Participants enjoyed a bacon butty on arrival, hog roast for lunch and the chance to win a wheelbarrow full of alcohol, as well as taking part in Welly Wanging, where competitors were required to hurl a wellington boot as far as possible within boundary lines, from a standing or running start. Rob Gray was the 2019 Champion Welly Wanger.

Sue Reid, events manager at Diverse Abilities, said: “Our first Country Challenge event was a great success. We want to thank Purbeck Shooting School for hosting the event and everyone that took part who helped us to raise £7,600.”

Rosie Kennar, Hoburne Group chairman, attended the Country Challenge event and said: “What a fabulous day! Brilliantly organised and a great venue with charming yet professional instructors to help the team members through the various activities. Just the right mix of competitive spirit and fun – along with the opportunity to shine at practised disciplines as well as having a go at totally new ones.

“Congratulations to all involved – a huge sum was raised on the day for this extraordinary charity. I, along with our Hoburne team members, thoroughly enjoyed this event and some were quite hooked – and not just on the fly fishing! I would highly recommend.”

Graham Brown, managing director at Purbeck Shooting School, said: “We are proud to have facilitated the first Country Challenge, helping to raise just over £7,000 for the charity. We are looking forward to getting involved in future events to support Diverse Abilities.”
